As you drive north from East London the houses slowly disappear and the countryside opens up into the Transkei. This is a magical part of South Africa so often overlooked by the travelling tourists eager to press on up to Durban. Home to Nelson Mandela, the Transkei is unrecognisable to the cosmopolitan cities of Cape Town and Durban. Made up of small, traditional African settlements, rolling green hills and breathtaking empty beaches, the Transkei will take you back to the Africa of 100 years ago. This is the real Africa and those that venture in will be rewarded with memories that will last a lifetime.
The Coffee shack is run by Dave Malherbe. Older brother to Andre, Dave was drawn to the Transkei by stories of epic empty waves and a traditional society that embraces a slower pace of life. Dave is one of South Africa’s most successful competitive surfers and his list of achievements goes on and on. His enthusiasm for the sport and vast coaching experience rub off on every surfer lucky enough to spend time at his hostel.
The Coffee Shack is every travellers dream. Days turn into weeks and weeks to months, as travel plans are rapidly re-hashed to take in all that is on offer. The camp is made up of traditional huts set just back from a deserted beach. Large hammocks line the water’s edge and daily activities are arranged from coastal walks to cliff jumping, drum making and nights with local families. The Coffee Shack also plays an important role within the local community and has set up several initiatives to help local schools and families.
The surf is empty and offers the rare chance to surf perfect waves with only your friends for company. With a good beachbreak and a right hand pointbreak all to ourselves, Coffee Bay provides us with a great chance for video coaching, surfing competitions and to begin preparations for the courses just around the corner in Durban.
After a day’s surfing the empty waves right out front take a “Sundowner” and watch the sun set from an empty cliff-top with a cool beer. Then wake up the next morning and do it all over again.
Coffee Bay is a truly unique stop off on our tour. With so much on offer, relax and make the most of the activities available.
