Happy Landings in Cape Town

Thursday, 06th May 2010 @ 17:01

Hi all and welcome to the start of another Ticket to Ride African Road Trip.

We are in Cape Town at the moment which is stop 1 of 5 that our little crew will be visiting over the course of the next 6 weeks, and it promises to be another classic!

So far there’s not too much to report. The guys all got into Cape Town on Tuesday so most of the day was spent doing airport runs and getting everybody settled in.

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have a day of offshore winds down in Muizenberg, which is where the group will be doing their surfing lessons while in Cape Town. We spent the morning session going over some of the basics just to get everybody back up to speed. While in the afternoon it was out to the back to get a taste of some real Muizenberg surf. A double lesson is usually a shock to the system, what with all that paddling about, but the guys seemed to manage just fine, and other than a few sore arms, it was smiles all round.

Later that evening, we went out to one of the local pizza places for a bite to eat. We didn’t stay too long as our bodies were crying out for some sleep after all the surfing, so it was back to our house to curl up for the night.

Today is the start of a cold front that will be moving up the country. This normally means bad weather for the first day or so and then perfect surf for the next week! So we’re holding thumbs for what’s to come.

Until then…

Take Care,
Bevan

Adventures in the Mother City

Tuesday, 11th May 2010 @ 07:42

Hi all and welcome back to Cape Town.

It’s all been happening here in the Mother City and things look set to continue for the next few days. The winds have been non-stop, offshore since we’ve been here, which has to be a first for me, and we’ve been making the most of it, with double surf sessions just about every day.

On Thursday we had a double lesson at Muizenberg. The guys tried out some different shaped and sized boards to narrow it down to the perfect one. With the neap tides, the waves weren’t really affected by the tidal shift so we surfed all day until our arms just wouldn’t go anymore.

On Friday there was a break in the weather so we made our way into Cape Town to climb Table Mountain, the icon of the city as well as check out a few of the spots in town. The hiking trail is called Platteklip (flat rocks) and takes you up the side of the mountain and through a massive gully to the top. The winding path offers some truly outstanding views of the whole of the city and the west coast. From the top you can pretty much see everything. Camps Bay, Cliffton, Sea Point, even the brand new Green Point Soccer stadium that will host the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

After the climb we made our way back to Kommetjie along the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive, which takes you along the ocean-facing cliffs of Hout Bay. The views of the bay are epic and make for some awesome photo ops.

The weekend surf conditions were good again so we spent most of our time in Muizenberg hanging out and surfing as much as we could. On our way home on Sunday we stopped over at Boulders Beach to check out some of the penguins before making our way round the mountain passes of the Cape Point back to Kommetjie.

Yesterday the weather really closed in on us so we weren’t able to meet up with Thomas from the Masiphumelele township to play some football with the kids from the Ticket to Ride foundation. Instead we surfed another double session at Muizenberg before heading home for some boereworse rolls (SA tradition) and a movie.

Today the weather looks to clear again, which means we’ll probably see Thomas and the kids later this afternoon for some beach football. So until then…

Take care,
Bevan
